"New guide offers parents advice on how to improve communication with children on issues occurring in modern society"
"Easy to use and practical direction on a range of subjects including internet access, natural disasters, the environment, mobile phones, sex, crime, recreational drugs and poverty"
"A new guide published today aims to provide parents with the skills required to interact with their children on a variety of issues, ranging from traditional subjects such as encouraging good manners and trouble-free bedtimes, to those affecting children in the world today including mobile phone and internet usage, coping with natural disasters and discouraging recreational drug use"
'How to Talk to Your Child' has been written by head teacher Penny Oates who, having been frequently asked to give advice to parents on a wide variety of topics, felt concerned that adults were finding it increasingly difficult to interact with children during what are often the most influential years of their lives.
Commenting on the book, Penny Oates said "Parenting is a daunting prospect in today's society and adults face increasing pressure to discuss all kinds of issues that were non-existent when they were in their children's shoes such as internet access, global warming, pre-teen sex and even terrorism. There is also a stigma attached to asking for help and I hope that I can pass on some of the tips I've acquired from a lifetime in education to address any existing problems and also pre-empt possible future difficulties.
"Whatever the problem, I have always found that the best way to achieve a positive outcome for children is through communication. Time spent in listening and talking is never wasted and will help parents achieve a productive and loving relationship with children during the years when effective communication is so vital."
Parents want to create a stimulating, comforting and secure space for their children however, this is also the context in which children need to learn important and sometimes very difficult lessons about life if they are to grow up to become responsible adults.
