Children's Books - 0 to 2 years old

Children learn about language and communication long before they begin to speak, so it is essential they have an environment rich in language and sound. Reading aloud to your baby is a crucial way of stimulating him and developing those language skills. Babies love it when you sing and read to them, telling them stories, poems and rhymes, and even small babies can enjoy books.

Board books and bath books are great because they can be treated as toys but they help babies learn how turn the pages and enjoy the shapes and colours. Try to share books together every day, not just at bedtime. A few minutes of special quiet time with a book every day is more valuable than half an hour a week.

Children often want to listen to the same story again and again. This is fine and builds confidence and familiarity with words. It also reinforces that stories are fun.

Remember that establishing the habit of reading is one of the best things you can do for your child. Nothing else offers such a range of imaginative pleasures or so much intellectual stimulation.
